Can You Add XRP to MetaMask?
No — you cannot add native XRP to MetaMask. MetaMask is an Ethereum-based wallet that supports EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible blockchains. The XRP Ledger uses a completely different architecture that is not EVM-compatible, so MetaMask cannot interact with it directly.
This is one of the most searched questions in crypto — and unfortunately, many guides online give misleading answers. Let’s clear up the confusion.
Why XRP Doesn’t Work With MetaMask
MetaMask was built for the Ethereum ecosystem. It can connect to:
- Ethereum Mainnet
- EVM-compatible chains: Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche C-Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, etc.
- Any network that implements the Ethereum JSON-RPC API
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) uses a completely different protocol:
- Different address format (XRP addresses start with “r”)
- Different transaction format and signing scheme
- Different API (XRPL WebSocket/HTTP API, not Ethereum JSON-RPC)
- Different smart contract system (XRPL has hooks and native DEX, not EVM)
Adding “XRP” as a custom network in MetaMask will not work — there is no MetaMask-compatible XRP network RPC endpoint because the XRPL doesn’t speak Ethereum’s language.
What About Wrapped XRP (wXRP)?
Wrapped XRP tokens exist on some EVM chains:
- wXRP on Ethereum: An ERC-20 token representing XRP, custodied by a bridge provider. You can add this to MetaMask — but it is not the same as native XRP
- wXRP on BNB Chain: Similar wrapped token on BNB Smart Chain
Wrapped XRP involves bridge custody risk — you’re trusting a third party to hold native XRP and issue wrapped tokens. Liquidity is also thin compared to native XRP markets.
The XRPL EVM Sidechain Option
In 2024–2025, Ripple launched an EVM-compatible sidechain for the XRP Ledger. This sidechain:
- Is EVM-compatible — MetaMask can connect to it
- Uses XRP as the native gas token
- Bridges to the main XRPL via the Axelar network
To use XRP on the XRPL EVM sidechain with MetaMask:
- Add the XRPL EVM Sidechain network to MetaMask (via chainlist.org or manually)
- Bridge XRP from XRPL mainnet to the EVM sidechain via the Axelar bridge
- Your bridged XRP will appear in MetaMask as the EVM sidechain’s native token
Important: This is a different chain with different risk profile than mainnet XRPL. For simply storing or transacting native XRP, this is unnecessary overhead.
Best Alternatives to MetaMask for XRP
1. Xaman (formerly XUMM) — Best for Most Users
Xaman is the most popular non-custodial XRP wallet. It’s a mobile app (iOS + Android) designed specifically for the XRP Ledger with full feature support including trust lines, DEX trading, and NFTs. Free to use for basic functionality.
2. Tangem — Best Hardware/Card Wallet
Tangem is a hardware wallet in NFC card form. Tap your phone to your Tangem card to sign transactions. Supports native XRP with no computer required.
3. Ledger — Best Full Hardware Wallet
Ledger hardware wallets (Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax) support XRP natively via the Ledger Live app or Xaman integration.
4. Trust Wallet
Binance’s Trust Wallet supports native XRP along with hundreds of other assets. Available on iOS and Android.
5. Exodus
Desktop and mobile wallet with native XRP support and built-in swap functionality.
Summary: Should You Use MetaMask for XRP?
No — MetaMask is the wrong tool for native XRP. Use Xaman for mobile/software, Tangem for a hardware card, or Ledger for a traditional hardware wallet. If you specifically want XRP in an EVM context (for DeFi on the XRPL EVM sidechain), you can bridge to the sidechain and use MetaMask — but this is an advanced use case for most users.
Conclusion
MetaMask does not and cannot support native XRP because the XRP Ledger is not EVM-compatible. The best alternatives are Xaman (the native XRPL mobile wallet), Tangem, or Ledger. Wrapped XRP exists on Ethereum but carries bridge custody risk. For most users wanting to hold and use XRP, Xaman is the recommended choice.
